Abstract EN

This study analyzes the image of the European theater in the writings of Arab intellectuals who, during the nineteenth century and the beginnings of the twentieth century, visited Europe and stayed in it for a relatively long period.

This image took in ideal characteristics.

Hence, theater manifested itself as a school for educating people, and refining their tastes.

It also involved new terms and techniques.

It was natural, therefore, that the discussion of theatrical issues stemmed from a preaching view that propagated the matter as a civil necessity.

This discussion tends also to be general in terms, and lacked historical precision.

The dimensions of this image, however, began to change at the beginnings of the twentieth century, when the discussion of theater became, historically speaking, more specific, particularly in Mohammed Rouhy Al-khalidi’s book “Tarikh Ilm al-Adab Ind al-firanj wa al-Arab wa Victor Hugo”, who is considered to be the leading figure of comparative studies in the modern Arab World.
