This paper presents the optimal PI controller parameters design of wind energy conversion system (WECS) equipped with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG).

The studies are conducted on a 9 MW WECS equipped with DFIG connected to a distribution network.

The variable speed DFIG is normally controlled by a set of PI controllers.

Due to nonlinearity and high complexity of the system, the optimal parameters of the controller are difficult to find out.

In this paper particle swarm optimization (PSO) is used to tune the parameters of the rotor side converter controller of the DFIG.

To limit the controller action and improve the performance, an optimization problem is formulated by selecting suitable objective function and constraints.

The system is studied under grid voltage sag due to remote fault.

single phase to ground fault and wind speed changes respectively.

The system performance with PI controller parameters and PSO optimized PI controller parameters are compared.

Simulation results show the improved transient behavior of the WECS equipped wih DFIG under test conditions.
