Abstract EN

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is an inflammation of the middle ear in which a collection of liquid is present in the middle ear space and there is an absence of the signs and symptoms of acute infection (I}.

"OMR" is a common problem in the pediatric age group.

When fluid accumulates in the middle ear, hearing is decreased and chronic cases may need surgical treatment, Ventilation tube ( tympanostomy tube) insertion in the tympanic membrane with or without adenoidectomy is the common surgical intervention that is recommended for chronic OME.

The present study was carried out from November 1993 through November 1996, on 55 cases of chronic bilateral OME unresponsive to conservative management, The ages ranged between 3.5 - 13 years (mean: 7.

2).

Male to female ratio was 1.2 to 1 In ail cases, chronic OMR was confirmed hy otoscopk examination as well as tympanometry.

The patients underwent surgical treatment Bilateral ventilation tube insertion and adenoidectamy were performed concurrently.
