An introduction and study of the knee joint structural parameters and their impact on degenerative joint disease (DJD)‎

Abstract EN

One of the main questions facing ihe knee joint is its susceptibility to degeneration-despite of its very large weight bearing area-compared with other joints of the human body.

Thinking about this susceptibility we- came to the following questions to he answered.

I- Is the cam effect in the knee joint a predisposing factor for DJD? 2- Is the percentage of tibial plateau covered by femur, effective on the joint health? 3- Is the, tibial plateau tilt a compromising factor for DJD ? To examine these structural factors and answer the questions we chose SO patients with DJD of the knee joint, .if) patients with knee pain hut without degeneration and 50 normal people, Cam effect was signifi¬cantly more in DJD group, compared with other groups (p<0.05p In DJD group, tibial plateau coverage was more than other groups fp<0.Ol).

Tibial plateau tilt had a same mean in the three groups but standard deviation was more in DJD group.

According to a supposed model it was found that 10° tilt is the most suitable tilt to distribute shearing forces in the knee joint.
