Abstract AR
Abstract EN
Phlomis floccose (family labiate) is a perennial plant distributes along the northwestern Mediterranean coast of Egypt.
The plant was studied in a protected (El-Okayed) and unprotected (Algebra) areas.
The results indicate that the plant grows from October to late July.
The mean height of the plant was 54.3 cm.
The soil as sandy with low contents of potassium, sulphates and organic carbon.
The soil moisture content varied between the two areas.
Such soil characteristics affect the phenology, fresh and dry weights, absolute density, cover and chemical composition of the plant.
P.
floccose grows as dominated with Gymnocarpos decorum in El-Okayed and as a common species in the Silybum Mariana community in Algebra.
The absolute density, cover and frequency of the plant in Algebra were higher than in El-Omayed .The greatest fresh and dry weights of the plant (1417 and 1167 g) were in spring.
The amounts of the chemical constituents of the plant in summer were higher than in the winter.
The total carbohydrate, total protein, crude fiber and organic matter reached 38.1, 12.1, 22.3 and 98.7% respectively.
The study indicated that, the highest percentage of seed germination of P.
floccose (44.4 %) were in the seeds exposed to 4˚C for 2 h during the germination test in laboratory condition (34 / 23˚C day / night temperature).
