Abstract EN
Seven groundnut cultivars were used in this study, three of them (Abyad, Tiskari and Gangis) are indigenous cultivars grown under rainfed conditions in Zalingi area of western Sudan.
The other three (Ashford, and Medani) are released ones for irrigated areas in central Sudan, and one (Sodari) was released for sandy soils in western Sudan.
The seven cultivars were analyzed for their proximate composition, mineral contents and fatty acid composition.
The oil content was significantly (P< 0.05) higher in Ashford than the other cultivars, while the protein content was significantly (P< 0.05) higher in Abyad and Gangis than the other cultivars.
The oil content ranged from 45.2%to54.8% and protein content from 23.4%to29.7%.In all cultivars increased oil contents was associated with high 100-seed mass for all cultivars.
The seven groundnut cultivars were good sources of minerals Calcium content ranged from 105.9 to 167.9 mg/lOOg, Potassium 1245.5 tol406.7mg/100g, Sodium 35 to 60mg/100g and phosphorus 780 to 960mg/100g.
Wide variability was noticed for fatty acid composition for the seven groundnut cultivars and in their oleic to linoleic acid ratio.
Oleic acid ranged from 37% to 53%, while linoleic acid ranged from 26% to 38%; together they contributed 75% to 79%.
The ratio of oleic acid to linoleic acid for the seven groundnut cultivars ranged from 1.0% to 2T1 %.
