منذ اللحظة التي أدار جومسكي دفة القيادة في الدراسات اللغوية باتجاه نفس–لغوي ذهني عقلاني كانت فكرتي المعرفة اللغوية (competence) لمتكلمي اللغة و الأداء اللغوي (performance) لأولئك المتكلمين موضوع بحث عريض.
و قد استلهمهما الكثير من العلماء في مجالي اللغة و الدب و عدوهما من أفضل تفسيراتهم للظاهرة اللغوية عند الإنسان.
و عليه فلقد تعددت أنواع المعرفة اللغوية وفقا للمنظور الذي يتبناه الباحث في تحليله اللغوي و احتاج الباحثون لإعادة النظر بمفهوم النحو (grammar).
و لعل من بين الأسئلة الحرجة في هذا المجال هو "لماذا لم يقدم النحويون التحويليون–التوليديون نحوا شاملا لأية لغة لحد الآن؟ و قد حاولت نظريات المعرفة اللغوية و نظريات الأداء اللغوي تسليط الأضواء على نوع الصعوبات التي يواجهها أولئك النحويون.
