Abstract EN

The establishment of a viable national press was one of the major achievements of the Jordanian state during the early years of its founding.

This achievement is certainly the cornerstone of the development of the press in Jordan .

In its journey of evolution , this press has gone through many junctures.

It has experienced periods of success and failure , rise and fall, leading to the present stage of development which.

is marked with certain characteristics worthy of study and examination .

The author sought in this work to conduct a historical study of the development of the Jordanian press from 1920 to the present, with a review of the major periodicals published during that time, and the political, social and economic circumstances surrounding them.

He discussed in his study the issue of the merging of newspapers that took place in 196r, and the influence the 1967 Arab-Israeli War had on these papers.

This study introduces the reader to the various type of the Jordanian press from the dailies and weeklies (the independent ones as well as those affiliated with political parties, and the ones which employ sensationalism) to the magazines, and the specialized publications which address various educational, scientific, social, and health concefns.

The research reviews as well the public relations magazines issued by various Jordanian institutions, firms and organizations .

It was the intention of the author to provide a documentary study of the ownership of the leading Jordanian newspapers, their publishers, and the intellectual, political, and informational orientations they adopt and promote.

On the other hand, this is a preliminary study that invites researchers to conduct other studies of the Jordanian press in all its intellectual, technical and administrative aspects.

The author makes no claim that his study is comprehensive covering all tht challenges confronting the press in Jordan.

The objective set forth , and hopefully reached, by the author is to provide the reader with an introduction to the newspapers and magazines published in Jordan at the present time, with an examination of their various orientations and concerns
