Abstract EN

Purpose : The purpose of this study is to compare the IOP- reducing effect and side effccts of 0.005% latanoprost applied topically once daily in the evening with 0.5% timolol given twice daily for 6 months to patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Patients and Methods : A total of 40 eyes with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension were included in the study.

20 eyes received latanoprost 0.005 % applied once daily in the evening while the other 20 eyes received timolol 0.5 % twice daily.

During the study, six visits were scheduled : before .starting treatment, and after 2 weeks, 1, 2, 4, and 6 month's treatment.

Examinations were made ut 10 AM.

And 8 PM at baseline and last visits, whereas the other visits included an examination at 8 PM only.

Results : As regards Latanoprost, IOP had been reduccd from a baseline level of 23.5 ± 1.7 mmHg to I6.3 ± l.0 mmHg at the end of the treatment period.

As regards Timolol, IOP had been reduced from baseline level of 24.4 ± l.5 mmHg to 17.6 ± 1.6 mmHg at the end of the study.

As regards ocular side effects, it can be seen that ocular symptoms such as foreign body sensation, ocular discomfort, and conjunctival hyperemia occurred more with the latanoprost group.

Conclusion : Latanoprost 0.005 % administered once daily in the evening reduced IOP more than timolol 0.5% administered twice daily.
