The impact of land reclamation on groundwater occurrence and quality in Kafr Daoud area, western fringes of Nile delta

Kafr Daoud area (140 km2) is today suffering a decline in water levels and a rise in water salinity.

This phenomenon is well recognized in some parts of the area with different rates where it constitutes a serious problem against reclamation.

In the present study, the aquifer depletion and salinity increase, are evaluated through hydro geologic survey field measurements and some chemical analysis of surface water and groundwater samples.

Moreover, the surface water/groundwater relationship is evaluated.

For the water quality assessment, salinity distribution is discussed, as well as, ion content and ion combinations.

The evaluation of water usage for irrigation purposes is also discussed by applying some international methods of evaluation. Eventually, recommendations were given to improve drilling specifications and to control groundwater extraction from wells.
