This article reviews the concept of depression in schizophrenia, looking at the current attitudes to aetiology, classification and management.
Depressive features may precede the first appearance of schizophrenic phenomena, may coexist with the acute phase of the illness or may occur for the first time in the post-psychotic phase of the illness or as the first indicator of impending relapse.
The article reviews the problems of definition and assessment.
The impact of personality and life events.
It also throws light on postpsychotic depression when acute schizophrenic symptoms are in remission.
Contrary to earlier studies, depression does not signify better outcome of schizophrenia as recent studies are showing.
Lastly, the implication of the use of neuroleptics in the aetiology and the treatment of depressive symptoms in schizophrenia is discussed.

Cet article revoit le concept de depression dans la schizophrenic, regardant les attitudes courantes pour l’etiologie, la classification et la conduite a tenir.
Les caracteristiques depressives penvent preceder l’apparition des phenomenes schizophreniques, peuvent coexister avec la phase aigue de la maladie ou peuvent survenir pour la premiere fois dans la phase post-psychatique de la maladie, ou comme le premier indicateur d’une rechute imminente.
L’article revoit les problemes de definition et devaluation, l’impact de la personnalite et des evenements de la vie.
II jette aussi de la lumiere sur la depression post-psychotique quand les symptomes schizophre- niques sont en remission.
En opposition avec les etudes precedentes, la depression ne signifie pas une meilleure evolution de la schizophrenic comme des etudes recentes 1’ont montre.
En dernier lieu, l’implication de 1’utilisation de neuroleptiques dans Fetiologie et le traitement des symptomes dSpressifs dans la schizohrenie
