Though there is no published report, apparently the extensive mass media campaign and the establishment of 3 specialized drug abuse centers in Saudi Arabia are indicative of emergence of drug abuse/addiction problems.
We carried out a preliminary study to evaluate the demographic parameters, pattern and comorbidity of drug abuse among 120 male mental patients in a controlled fashion by using different testing materials.
The computer analysis of data revealed that relatively single and/or disruptive marital life, poor social class, unskilled job and or unemployment and several psychosocial stresses were significantly associated with drug abuse.
The multiple drug abuse patterns and a variety of mental disorders also characterized these patients.
It is suggested that the tentative data of this research might stimulate interest in other researchers to study further the different aspects of drug abuse/addictions in Arabian peninsula.

Bien qu’il n’y ait pas de rapport publie, apparemment l’extension de campagne par les mass medias et la creation de 3 centres specialises dans l’abus de drogue en Arabie Saoudite sont indicatifs d’emergence de problems d’abus de drogue et de toxico manie.
Nous avons effectue une etude preliminaire pour evaluer les parametres demographiques, le mode d’utilisation et la co-morbidite d’abus de drogue parmi 120 malades mentaux males d’une maniere controlee en utilisant differents materiels de mesure.
L’analyse sur ordinateur des donnees r£vela que, relativement, le celibat et/ou une vie conjugale rompute, la classe sociale panvre, le travail de manaeuvre et/on le chomage et plusieurs stress psycho-sociaux etaient significativement associes a un abus de drogues.
Les multiples modes d’abus de drogue et une variete de troubles mentaux caracteriserent aussi ces patients.
II est propose que les donnees d’essai de cette recherche pourraient stimuler 1’interet d’autres chercheurs a pousser 1’etude des differents aspects d’abus de drogues et de la toxicomanie dans la peninsule Arabe.
