All admissions to the psychiatry in-patient unit at King Fahd Hospital of the University, Al-Khobar, during one year period April 1988-March 1989 were retrospectively assessed by examining their case notes.
The assessment included diagnostic categories and sociodemographic characteristics.
The male: female ratio was 1:1, 06.
The majority of patients (75.3%) were young, aged 15-34 years.
The commonest diagnosis was affective disorder (43.8%).
Depressions accounted for 35% while schizophrenias accounted to 22.8%.
Acute psychosis was recorded as a final diagnosis in 8.2% and hysteria in 3.9%.
The possible sociocultural and medical implications of the findings were discussed.

Une 6tude retrospective a ete effectuee sur tous les malades hos- pitalises £ I'hdpital King Fahd de I'universite de Al-Khobar pendant une pehode dun an (Avril 1988 - Mars 1989.) L 'etude comporte le diagnostic par categories et par caresteristiques socio demographiques des difierents malades.
Le rapport M&le: femelle 1:1.06 La majorite des malades etaitJeune (75.3%) de (15-34a ns).
Le diagnostic le plus frequent etait les desordres affectifs 43.8%, Les depressions representaient 35% tandis que les schizophrenics atteig- naient 22.8%.
La psychose etait le diagnostic final dans 8.2% et I'Hys- terie dans 3.9%.
Les implications medicates et socioculturelespossibles des differents donnees ont ete discutees.
