Abstract EN

This study aims at identifying the obstacles facing learners at Al Quds Open University, and the effect of the variables of age and gender on the nature of these problems.

This identification will be used in evaluating the learners' counseling needs, so as to provide for them suitable counseling support services.

This aims at alleviating the students’ academic, social and psychological difficulties.

To achieve this, a study tools of 46 indicators covering all three areas was developed and applied on a Stratified Random Sample of (613) learners selected from five educational regions using cluster samplings.

The results demonstrated that the most serious problems experienced by learners at Al Quds Open University are related to the unavailability of comfortable testing and study atmospheres; to in efficiency in the role of the academic supervisor in dealing with courses, requirements and learner motivation, and its impact on student achievement; in addition to the shortage of psychosocial support services that contribute to the learners' level of adjustment.

The findings of the study indicated that the order of learners' counseling needs and guidance priorities for learners in the three spheres of the study are as follows: academic, psychological and social.

The statistical analysis of the study also showed that there are significant differences between the sexes in terms of the problems they face, and therefore their counseling needs; it was shown that males have a higher level of difficulties than females in the social sphere.

As for the age variable, the study showed that the suffering of students within the 30 years-old age group and over is highly evident in the academic and psychological spheres, but less evident among the 20 to 30 years-old age group.

Therefore these learners need counseling support more urgently.
