The article presents an overview of the historical development of the con¬cept of mental illness, from the ancient times to the Greek and Arab Cultures, up to the modern era.
The pharaonic concepts of hysteria depression and suicide were explored, the etiology of mental illness in different cultures was discussed.
The Islamic period was seen through the Koran and the different books of the great Arab physicians.

Cet article present une enquête du développement historique du concept des maladies mentales de l’ancienne époque, de la culture greque et arabe jus qu’au l’aire moderne.
Les concepts pharaoniques de la dépression hystérique et du suicide sont revus.
L’étiologie des maladies mentales dans différente cultures fût discutée.
L’âge islamique a été revu a travers le Coran et les différents livres des grands médecins arabes.
