The role of human behavior in development programs : a field study

Abstract EN

This research paper deals with the pest problem in Al-Hashimiyeh, Jordan.

It attempts to analyze potential control measures through developing an in-depth understanding of the community's knowledge, beliefs, practices and attitudes in relation to the problem.

It is an attempt to explore the role of human behavior in dealing with the problem.

The main aim of this assessment of social impact is to explore the possibilities of involving the inhabitants of the area in a treatment process.

The project aims at reducing the swarms of mosquitoes around the Al-Samra water treatment plant near the town of Al-Hashimiyeh.

To achieve this goal research was conducted using three techniques of data collection including : a household survey, focus-group discussions and key-informational interviews.

A sample of 234 households was selected for interviewing purposes.

Findings of the study may be summed up as follows : 1) Human and behavioral dimensions may play a major role in the implementation of a pest control program.

2) People in the community are willing to participate effectively in planning and problem solving for sustained program intervention.

3) People in the area are aware of the socio-economic and psychological health problems associated with the water treatment plant.

4) They are using both traditional and modern measures to protect themselves such as : screens, insecticides, and nets, electronic repellents, and poison to control insects.
