Abstract EN

The present work studied effects of the organophosphate insecticide, Sumithion on the liver of albino rats.

Treating animals with sumithion at a dose level of 60 mglkg body weight orally for up to 15 days induced elevation in the activity of AST and ALT in the plasma of the examined animals.

Histological examination of the liver of treated rats revealed apparent signs of degenerative changes.

The normal organization of the hepatic lobules was impaired, the hepatocytes showed cytoplasmic vacuolation and the blood vessels were congested and engorged with blood.

Inflammatory leucocytic infiltrations comprised mainly of lymphocytes and sparse eosinphils spread over several liver areas.

The hepatic damage may explain the elevation in the levels of AST and ALT.
