Modified technique for mayo’s repair of umbilical and paraumbilical hernia

Abstract EN

Objective : To describe a modified surgical technique for Mayo’s repair of umbilical(UH ) and Para umbilical hernia (PUH ) and to compare the results of both of them. Methods : Over ten years period 382 patients with UH or PUH were repaired by this new modification after taking their informed consent.

The principle of this modification is using of vertical (perpendicular) mattress instead of horizontal mattress sutures.

Antibiotics were used in obese patients and in complicated hernias Postoperative follow-up was for 6 to 24 months.

Results : The mean duration of operative time was 48 minutes which is significantly lower than that of Mayo's in a p value of < 0.05 (48 versus 60 minutes ) , 3 (0.78% ) patients had wound infection ( p > 0.05 , Not Significant), 14 (3.66%) had subcutaneous serous collection (p > 0.05 , Not Significant); 8 (2.09%)had hematomas (p > 0.05 , Not Significant), Mean hospital stay was 1.4 days ( p > 0.05 , Not Significant ) , 2(1.38%) patients had recurrence which is significantly lower than that of Mayo's in a p value < 0.01.

Conclusion : This modification for Mayo's technique is easy , safe and with a lower recurrence rate compared to the conventional Mayo’s repair.

This may make it standard treatment.
