Abstract EN

The study of the relationship between climate and urban morphology of human settlements throughout history is relatively a new field.

This research focused on developing a set of guidelines with regard to the major climatic regions.

The main issues such as spatial configuration and morphological elements that may have an effect on energy conservation were discussed.

The relevant historic and climatic information on settlements in particular regions were collected and analysed in order to develop regional, comprehensive and comparative guidelines for sustainable urban design.

This could reduce the total energy consumption.

Since more than half of the world's energy consumption occurs in urban areas, the implementation of the results of this research could help in reduction of greenhouse gases.
