Abstract EN

Background : the use of propofoi for sedation during endoscopic procedures has increased in recent years, because of its favorable pharmacokinetic profile compared with traditional endoscopic sedation with benzodiazepines and opioids. Aims : we sought to update the safety experience of propofoi for gastrointestinal endoscopic sedation in Egyptian children. Methods : we reviewed the files of 200 patients (100 for upper, 100 for lower endoscopy) of age above 2 years old, attending pediatric unit of gastrointestinal endoscopy for diagnosis and treatment and were premeditated by propofoi (0.6 -0.7 mg / kg, iv).

We reviewed all complications which were available in all patients : apnea, number of mask ventilations, endotracheal intubations, permanent neurologic injuries, and death. Results : A total of 200 cases were identified.

Endotracheal intubations, permanent neurologic injuries, and deaths were 0, 0, and 0, respectively.

The procedure was interrupted 5 times for mask ventilation and suction.

The overall number of cases requiring mask ventilation after the procedure was 7 (4 cases of upper, 3 cases of lower endoscopy) of 200 cases with data available.

For sites, specifying mask ventilation risk by procedure type, 2 (4%) and 3 (6%) of patients required mask ventilation during their esophagi-gastro-duodena-endoscopy (EGDE) and colonoscopy respectively. Conclusion : it is 'Safe are^ effective to use propofoi intravenous sedation for gastrointestinal endoscopy in pediatric unit.
