Abstract EN

Background: intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) results in significant perinatal and long-term complications, including higher risk for later development of insulin resistance / metabolic syndrome.

Ghrelin and resist in are potent regulators of glucose homeostasis and energy metabolism. Aims: the aim of this study was to determine whether cord blood resists in and ghrelin concentrations are different in small-for gestational age (SGA) infants compared with appropriate for- gestational age (AGA) infants and its relationship to anthropometric measurements at delivery and insulin level. Methods: blood samples were obtained from 20 term SGA (SGA group) and 20 term AGA healthy neonates (control group) at birth from the umbilical cord.

The following anthropometric variables were studied: birth weight, length, Pondera index (PI).

Resist in and ghrelin were determined by ELISA and insulin by radioimmunoassay method. Results: resist in levels were significantly lower and ghrelin levels were significantly higher in SGA group than the control group.

Ghrelin levels were negatively correlated with birth weight, length and ponder index in SGA group. Plasma resist in levels were positively correlated with birth weight and length in the same group.

There were no correlations between ghrelin and resist in levels in SGA group. •Conclusioru The significant association of resist in and ghrelin with anthropometric indexes suggests that both metabolic hormones are gestation related and may play an important role in modulating energy homeostasis and regulating growth in utero.
