Impact of body mass index on early complications for patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery : a comparative study

Abstract EN

Objective : To determine the effectiveness of body mass index on early complications for patients undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG).

Methods : A purposive sample which is consisted of (50) patients who are undergoing (CABG) consecutively and admitted to the surgical ward and are followed up in the intraoperative unit, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and postoperative unit (surgical ward).

Results : Through the data analysis, it is found that there is no significant difference between normal weight patients, overweight patients and obese patients during their lengthy stay in the ICU, Atrial arrhythmias, and a total drain amount range from (< 500- ≥ 2000) ml of blood.

Recommendations : Obese patients should be encouraged to increase their cardio respiratory fitness by engaging in a regular, moderate intensity physical activity.

This should benefit them even if they remain overweight.
