Evaluation of nurses' practices concerning post cardiac care of children undergoing cardiac catheterization

Objective : Evaluation of nurses' practices concerning post cardiac care of children undergoing cardiac catheterization Methodology: A descriptive study was carried out at three hospitals (Ibn AL-Bettar Hospital for Heart Surgery, Ibn AL-Nafees Hospital for Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery and Iraqi Center for Heart Diseases) in cardiac units that received children undergoing cardiac catheterization.

During the period from end of February 2008 to the end of september-2008, A non-probability (purposive) sample of 30 nurses, who worked at center and cardiac units in Baghdad city.

The tool of the study included questionnaire which has two parts.

Reliability of questionnaire determined through internal consistency through pilot study, and content validity of the questionnaire was determined through experts panel.

The data were analyzed through the application of the descriptive statistic : frequencies, percentages, mean of score and the inferential statistical analysis : Pearson correlation coefficient, Chi-sequare t test and Fisher's test.

Results : The study revealed weak nursing care provided to children post-cardiac catheterization High Significant relationship between nurses' years of experience and their immediate nursing care provided to children post cardiac catheterization procedure.

There is significant relationship between gender, level of education and post cardiac catheterization nursing care which provides advices to the child and his family before discharge from the hospital.

Recommendations : The study recommended that it is necessary to develop nurses' skills by giving them the chance to complete their university study with training sessions in developed country to improve nursing care that provided to the child and his family during cardiac catheterization procedure.
