Abstract EN

Background : The study aimed to assess bile acids in sera of patients with acute and chronic fascioliasis and its relation to the bile acid precursor-cholesterol and correlate that with other liver functions.

The study was carried out on 45 individuals divided on three groups: 15 patients with chronic fascioliasis, 15 patients with acute fascioliasis and 15 parasite free healthy individuals as control.

All patients and control were subjected to hematological, parasitological and biochemical studies.

Anemia and Leucocytosis with esinophilia were observed in patients under study which was correlated with egg count and anti-Fasciola antibody titer.

The study revealed a higher level of bile acids in sera of patients with fascioliasis in comparison to controls.

They were positively correlated with the raised levels of cholesterol and serum transaminases.

Reviewing results of the study showed that bile acids assessment could be taken as a more sensitive test for hepatobiliary disorders than transaminases
