The aim of this work is directed toward investigating the failure of journal bearings using Acoustic Emission technology (AET).

Previous work and reports done by many individual scientists have shown that bearings suffer from decrease in efficiency after period of time, and there is no reliable method for testing bearing life.

Among the benefits resulting from this research has the ability to give early warning of a bearing failure with considerable accuracy, thus making it possible to match the bearing life with the service life of the machine involved.

Most materials and structures emit energy in the form of mechanical vibrations (acoustic emission) as a result of sudden change or movement .This is usually due to defect-related phenomena, such as surface wear, cracking or plastic deformations.

These acoustic emissions propagate from the source, throughout the structure.

The present work discusses diagnostic and signal analysis methods which help to recognize sliding journal bearing problems in their earliest stages faulty defects.

It outlines several parameters which affect bearing life, it reviews the complex problems related to bearing acoustic measurements, and it describes the Micro- analysis modes that provide the most up to- date solution to the early detection of bearing defects.

The obtained results showed that the Acoustic Emission Technology is very promising as a non-destructive test for components which are in real time service.
