Abstract AR

(Effective Size).

Abstract EN

The dual filter was tested in this study to increase the quantity of water production from the filters in water treatment plants.

Porcelains, which is one of the local materials, was selected to be the filter medium with sand in the experimental work.

The work required installing a pilot filtration unit in the location of the filters in one of the water treatment plants in Baghdad city.

The pilot filtration consisted of three plastic column filters, acting in parallel and simultaneously.

The first contained 70 cm sand, the second and third were dual filters of different arrangements.

The results showed that the dual filters had better performance than sand filters.

About 22 to 36% less volume of water was required to wash the dual filters due to the low uniformity coefficient (UN) of porcelains and its large effective size.

The net water production (NWP) varied between 3 to 70% more than that produced from sand filters, because of the long filter runs.

The results also showed that the dual filters were better in turbidity and bacterial removal, where in porcelains the sponges specula retained larger amounts of suspended solids.
