Abstract AR
Abstract EN
Thirty chromatist’s pods and five host harzburgite were studied.
This is the first paper on the occurrence of platinum-group minerals from chromatist’s rocks in Iraq.
Laurite minerals (RuS2) have been found in four of these pods.
The grain size of the laurite minerals are very fine-less than 5 µm, euhedral-shaped and form inclusions in fresh chromian spinal minerals.
The perfect euhedral shape and sharp boundaries of the laurite crystals suggest free growth origin at high temperature and early precipitate from a primitive magma.
The electron-microprobe analysis of the minerals shows that, the laurite is rich in Os, with the average Os content being 19% by weight, which suggests that the parent magma involved in the formation of Rayat chromatists was of sulfide-under saturated composition.
In terms of laurite composition, the Rayat chromatist’s rocks are similar to the Oman ophiolitic chromatist’s rocks.
