Currently there are a wide s ((variety of wheelchair designs that are commercially available.

These wheelchairs accommodate a variety of people's needs, *and represent significant progress.

There are a number of compromises required with each type of mobility device, and there was a need for a new class of device that was lightweight, maneuverable, and simple to transport.

From this need arose the pushrrm activated power assisted wheelchair (PAPAW).

A PAPAW uses motors and batteries to augment the power applied by the users to one or both pushrims during propulsion or braking.

Applying a torque to the pushrim activates the wheelchair.

A PAPAW may reduce the energy demands on the wheelchair user, improve daily driving activities, and reduce the strain on the upper extremities.

A PAPAW should also be considered when it is necessary to minimize home and vehicle modifications.

The PAPAW is a useful mobility tool in the arsenal of rehabilitation professionals working with people with physical impairments.
