Abstract AR
Abstract EN
Objective : To evaluate the microbial contamination of two different suture materials after minor oral surgical procedures.
Materials and methods : evaluation of the microbial contamination of two different suture materials after minor oral surgical procedures was investigated through randomized double-blind study.
A randomized sample of 20 patients, who had undergone oral surgery, was examined.
The suture materials (10 black silk and 10 polyglycolic acid), were placed intraoral at the same time to compare microbial contamination attached to them.
Eight days postoperatively, the sutures were removed, and adhered micro-organisms were isolated, counted, and identified.
Results : In all 20 patients polyglycolic acid suture exhibited the smallest affinity toward the contamination of bacteria compared with considerable contamination with black silk suture reaction of oral tissues was lower for polyglycolic acid compared to silk sutures.
Conclusion : Colonization with pathogens on sutures leads to the recommendation that sutures should be removed as early as possible after surgery to eliminate the reservoir for oral pathogens.
Polyglycolic acid suture is preferred than the black silk suture because of the smallest quantity of bacteria adhere to it which leads to less local tissue reaction and wound infection.
