The effect of polylactic acid and polyglycolic acid on the healing of bony defect

This work aim to assess the role of polylactic acid and polyglycolic acid PLG “fisiograft” on the healing of bony defect larger than the critical size which is larger than 2-3 cm in diameter.

Material and methods: Fifteen consenting patients (9 males and 6females) ranging from 19 to 31 years old with no age and sex predilection, complaining of large cyst exceeding the critical size participated in this study PLG was applied to obliterate the defect after cyst enucleation and patients were split into two groups test group and control group where defect left without obliteration.

Results: All treated defects in the test group showed clinical and radiological progress over time.

Bone healing was enhanced in sites treated with PLG faster than those cavities which left without obliteration.

Conclusions: PLG can be used successfully to aid in healing of bony larger than the critical size defect when the cyst is enucleated from jawbone.
