Abstract EN

Dentin sensitivity is one of the common problems in the dental office and reduction of the fluid hydraulic conductance of the dentinal tubules will reduce this sensitivity.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of application of an oxalate desensitizing agent, adhesive system or their combination on the permeability of dentin.

The ultra-morphology was also studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Dentin discs 1 mm thickness were prepared from thirty human intact molars, and then divided into three groups, relative to the type of the treatment; 3% monopotassiummonohydrogen oxalate (DDS#2), Glacier adhesive system or their combination after acid etching of dentine discs on both sides.

Hydraulic conductance was recorded at baseline, after etching (preoperative), 1-day and 1-week after treatment.

The permeability test scores were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA (P-value< 0.05).

Results revealed that all the tested dentin treatments significantly reduced the dentin permeability with no statistical significance between them.

However, the permeability scores increased after 1week for DDS#2 as compared to the scores recorded after 1-day.

SEM showed reduction of dentinal tubules patency for all tested materials.

It was concluded that: (1) Using either DDS#2 or Glacier adhesive system or their combination is effective in reducing the permeability of dentin.

(2)The patency and the number of dentinal tubules have direct effect on the permeability of dentin.

(3)The null hypothesis is accepted.
