Abstract EN
Aims and objectives: To compare the oral health status of children on haemodialysis with healthy controls.
Design: Comparative study was conducted between 17 children with End stage renal disease (ESRD) (Mean age-15.5 yrs) and 17 healthy children (Mean age-10.8 yrs).
Both the groups were compared statistically with respect to caries, plaque and gingival indices.
Results: Significant difference (P<0.05) with respect to dmft of mixed dentition, plaque and gingival indices were noticed between the groups.
There were no significant differences between ESRD patients and controls with respect to DMF indices of mixed dentition and permanent dentition.
A significantly greater proportion of the ESRD children with permanent dentition (57.4%) were caries free compared to the controls (0%).
Extrinsic tooth discolorations were more commonly observed in ESRD patients (70.54%) and none had intrinsic discolorations.
Conclusions: Lower dmft of mixed dentition with higher plaque accumulation and gingival inflammation were observed in ESRD children.
Dental and medical care should be closely integrated to avoid gingival problems and extrinsic staining, despite of low caries incidence in children with ESRD.
