Abstract EN
Reconstruction of the mandible is a challenging task due to the complexity and unique characteristic of the mandible.
The effect of mandibular bone discontinuity has a significant impact on the facial harmony, cosmetic appearance and disturbance in function.
.In this study six cases with mandibular discontinuity were reconstructed using free autogenous non vascularized iliac bone graft.
Follow up to viability of the grafts were done in first & six month postoperative using bone scintigraphy with Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT).The results showed increase the uptake of the tracer at graft edges with the appearance of photopenic area representing the bone graft after one month postoperative.
While in the six month photopenic areas in all cases were markedly reduced.
SPECT in association with clinical assessment.
is a highely sensitive technique in detection of bone graft viability.
It is concluded that osteoblastic activity at the graft area returns to normal level by the end of six month suggesting the end of the graft replacement process.
