Abstract EN
In this study, the morphology of the filiform papillae of the adult male healthy Egyptian dog tongue was investigated by the scanning electron microscope (SEM).
Tissue samples taken from the dorsal surface of the tongue of 10 male adult healthy dogs.
By scanning electron microscope, the filiform papillae observed on the dog tongue were composed of main cone shaped process and accessory finger like processes.
In the posterior part of the tongue, some papillae exhibited large, broad and wide base arising from its upper most part several finger like processes giving the papilla the morphology of an octopus or jellyfish appearance.
Bifid shape filiform papillae also seen in different areas of the tongue.
Most of these papillae appeared with a saw shaped lateral borders that did not mentioned before.
The results of this study added to the previously recognized mechanical role functions of the filiform papillae.
