Abstract EN

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic relapsing inflammatory pruritic skin disease, characterized by early onset during infancy or childhood, with personal or family history of allergic condition, and variable clinical presentation.

The etiology of atopic dermatitis is unknown, but it is believed to be a multifactorial disease, caused mainly by several genes and environmental triggers, beside immune and epidermal barrier dysfunction.

Interactions between all these factors play a key role in the pathogenesis of AD.

Extrinsic and Intrinsic atopic dermatitis are the main types of AD, which are similar in clinical presentation but different in immunological profile.

The following review describes the spectrum of atopic dermatitis and summarizes recent views about the etiology and pathogenesis of the disease.
