Mite and tick infestation in cattle : haemogram and some biochemcal parameters

The present study was conducted on 47 cattle of both sex with age ranging between two and three years old, of which 15 cattle suffered from skin lesions and 20 cattle suffered from external parasitic infestation.

A group of 12 clinically healthy cattle was used as control.

Parasitological examination revealed infestation of cattle with Psoroptes sp.

mites and Boophilus sp.

ticks.

Hierogram revealed normocytic normochromic anaemia in cattle infested with both ticks and mites.

Leucogram revealed insignificant changes in total leucocyte count and significant increase in eosinophils.

A significant increase in neutrophils was found in cattle infested with mites.

Biochemical serum analysis indicated hypoprotenemia, hypoalbuminemia, decreased A / G ratio and increased serum globulins in cattle infested with both ticks and mites.

Hypoglycemia was found in both infestations.

Cattle infested with ticks showed significant increases in serum AST and ALT, while only a significant increase serum AST was found in mites infested cattle.

In addition there were lowered serum levels in iron and copper in cattle infested with both ticks and mites.

Finally it could be concluded that infestation of cattle with ticks and mites severely affect the productivity, the general performance and the immune status of infested cattle, which in turn emphasize early and continuous eradication of both ectoparasites.
