Effect of carbofuran pollution on albino rats with trials of treatment with flaxseed

Sixty male albino rats were used to study the effect of dietary pollution with carbofuran pesticide on liver and kidney functions as well as fertility with trials to modulate this effect by using flaxseed.

Rats were divided to three equal groups.

The first group was kept as control while the two other groups were given carbofuran 100 mg / kg diet with addition of dietary 10% flaxseed to one of them for two months which considered chronic toxicity.

At the end of 2 months dosing period biochemical findings revealed increase in ALT, AST, urea, cholesterol and triglycerides in carbofuran dosed group, while flaxseed supplementation can significantly alter ALT and urea levels.

Regarding the effect of carbofuran on reproductive performances, it was found to reduce the epididymis and seminal vesicle weights, decrease sperm motility and testosterone level.

Moreover, supplement-ation with flaxseed significantly decrease epididymis weight and enh-anced the drastic effect of carbofuran on sperm count, viability, testosterone and leutinizing hormones levels .The current data sugges-ted that flaxseed might act as estrogen agonist.
