Studies on the parasites of wild animals at Kafr el-Sheikh city zoo with special reference to toxocara cati

A total number of 28 wild animals {5 Blue Nile Monkeys (Papio heul gini matchi), 3 African lions (Felis leo), 15 Asian goats (Capra hircusnnnnnbn linnaeus), 2 Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia), 2 double humped camels (Camelus Bactrianus) and one Miniature horse} held in captivity at Kafr El-Sheikh city zoo were examined by coprological techniques for the presence of parasite fauna.

Results indicated that the overall prevalence of infection was 55.2%.

Seven species of parasites were identified, 4 helminthes Trichostrongylus colubriformis, Osterta-gia circumcincta from Asian goats(40%), Strongyloides papillosus from Barbary sheep (100%) and Toxocara cati from African lions (33%) and 3 protozoa Entamoeba histolytica and Cryptosporidium species from Blue Nile monkeys and Eimeria species from Miniature horse.

The embryonic development of Toxocara cati eggs were assessed in the laboratory and fully described.

Detailed morphological descrip-tion were give to the detected parasites and parasites stages.

The result of the present investigation emphasis on the potential risk of the wild animals in the biological pollution of the environment and their role in transmission of serious zoonotic pathogens.
