مفهوم (الغنيمة)‎ في اللغتين الانجليزية و العربية : دراسة مقارنة

Abstract EN

This research dwells on the concept of al-ġanīma, booty, in English and Arabic, as it appears in two standard dictionaries of both languages, in terms of usage and meaning.

To this end, the researcher raised four questions: How do speakers of the two languages understand ‘booty’ and how philologists and lexicographers of both languages enter the meaning of ‘booty’ in their lexicons? What is the real meaning of ‘booty’ in the two languages and the possible similarities in meaning? Does the use of the term booty in the works of Orientalists on Islam agree with its Arabic meaning? The researcher concluded that the concept of booty, as used in English, is far from being a proper equivalence to the concept of booty in Arabic.

The English terms used in this regard, therefore, are not proper equivalents to the intended Islamic and Arabic concept.
