New complexes of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Cd(II) ions with Schiff base derived from salicylaldehyde and L-threonine have been prepared and characterized by using physical and chemical techniques (elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, magnetic moments, infrared and electronic spectroscopies).

The data exhibited the formation ratio of 1:2[M:L], and the thermogravimetric analysis data of Na[Mn(L)2]7H20 complex showed the existence of water of hydration molecules and MnO+Mn02.

The magnetic moment measurements displayed that all complexes except the cadmium complex are paramagnetic.

The infrared spectral results showed that complexation occurred through the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the ligand.

The electronic spectral data displayed the existence of n-p * (phenyl ring), n-p* (H-C=N) transitions and an octahedral geometry was proposed for all complexes.
