Abstract EN
Automated generalization is an important operation that helps in producing lower scale GIS database and digital maps from higher scale existing GIS database and digital maps.
It reduces the time, effort, human resources, and cost for producing generalized data sets from original ones and replaces the old manual generalization process and eliminates the necessity of producing various data sets and maps with different scales for the same regions.
Due to the advancement in the computer industry, information technology and the wide spread of digital maps, the world is moving towards the automation of different mapping and generalization processes.
In this paper a proposed approach for GIS database generalization is suggested using a software module that handle some GIS generalization functions using ARC / GIS Software package and visual basic for applications(VBA) programming language.
For evaluating the developed module, a real data set representing part from El Drasa district-Cairo of scale 1 : 5000 is used to produce target map of scale 1 : 50000.
The experimental work proves that the proposed technique is efficient and successful.
