Preliminary survey of selected trace elements in the Euphrates River near al-Nassiriya city southern part of Iraq

The concentration of 7 elements, Cd, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn has been determined in the Euphrates River near Al-Nassiriya city Iraq during the summer period/2002,Analysis were carried out by employing Flam AAs instrument.

Data are presented for present concentration for mentioned environmentally important elements in dissolved, particulate and sediment, also its concentration in four tissues from commercial fish species Carasobarbus luteus were determined.

The mean concentration of the studied elements was found in both fractions of water with less account in both fractions of sediment.

Aclear level of lead was recorded in a particulate fraction of water specially in station (3) due to the heavy densities, atmosphere input and industrial activites, while Cd and Pb were observed in high present among the elements in the exchangable fraction of the sediment indicating their anthropogenic sources.

Different concentration of trace elements were observed in different tissues of the studied fish, this was due to the level of the elements in their bodies during the uptake and elimination processes .The kidney accumulated Cd, while Co, Cu and Ni were accumulated in liver, Mn and Pb accumulated in gill.

Muscles showed less accumulation especially for Cd, Co and Pb.
