Effect of alcoholic extract of the black nightshade Soianum nigrum leaves, as an immunomodulator on cellular immune response, represented by delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH), was investigated itt BALB/C mice, infected -with protoscoleces of Evhinoooccus granulosus of sheep and human origin and treated wih different concentrations of the alcoholic plant extract priov to infecion.
Foot pad thickness in mice treated with the plant extract reached it; peak at 3-24 hours post injection with the antigen.
The significant increase, in general, in the foot pad thickness, indicated that the black nightshade leaves act as an active immunomodulator whioh provokes the cell- mediated immunity (CMI) in the host infected with hydatid disease.
Fractionation of the alcoholic plant extract and investigations on the effect of each fraction, as an immunomodulator, in addition to investigation on the aqueous extract of th; plant are recommended.
