Postgraduate studies in pediatrics (1993-2004)‎ and future perspectives

Abstract EN

Objectives.

1.

Evaluation of postgraduate training in the Pediatric Department, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Aden.

2.

Future perspectives for pediatric postgraduate studies.

Methodology This is a retrospective descriptive study based on reading and evaluating the available documents related with pediatric postgraduate program in Aden University.

Tables are used to depict the outcome of the training for the period from 1993 to 2004.

Results and discussion seventeen pediatric specialists ﴾ MSc Ped﴿ graduated from the Pediatric Department, University of Aden ; four of them from the first batch ﴾1993-1996﴿ and thirteen from the second batch ﴾1996-2000﴿.

Most of them are working in Al Wahda Teaching Hospital and Aden Teaching Hospital in Aden Governorate and the others in referral hospital in neighboring governorates.

Nine of the pediatric specialists from the first and second batches participate in the medical training of undergraduates and postgraduate training in our teaching hospitals in Aden.

A revised program is currently applied for the third batch master degree in pediatrics )2001-2004﴿ and a new program was prepared and is applied for the first batch master degree in child health by thesis after the pediatric diploma ﴾2001 -2004﴿.

The expected number of graduates at the end of this year is nine ; six of them from the third batch and all the three from the above mentioned first batch ﴾2001-2004﴿.

The future perspectives may be summarized as continuous improvement of the master degree program and the teaching hospital conditions as well as the preparation of a program for a higher degree of pediatric specialization such as PhD or MD.

Conclusion albeit all problems faced, the pediatric department, University of Aden has actively participated in the training of pediatric specialists who work in the field of their specialization and medical training.

The preparation of a program for a higher degree in pediatric specialization is necessary for quality- development of the medical training as well as for quality-improvement of the services delivered to the Yemeni child and his/her family.
