Abstract EN

Background : host responses to periodontal disease include the production of different enzymes that are released by stromal, epithelial or inflammatory cells into saliva & gingival crevicular fluid (GCF).

Aim of the study : to assess the difference in the activity of CK &BUN enzymes in the saliva of male patients with chronic periodontitis before and after non surgical periodontal treatment and to evaluate the correlation between these enzymes and probing pocket depth and relative attachment level.

Materials & methods: Measurements of plaque index (PlI), gingival index (GI), bleeding on probing (BOP), probing pocket depth (PPD) and relative attachment level (RAL) were taken from male patients suffering from chronic periodontitis before perio dontal treatment & one month after treatment.

Saliva was collected for biochemical analysis of the enzymes creatine kinase and blood urea nitrogen.

Results : the results have shown that after conventional periodontal therapy, the activity of these enzymes was significantly decreased.

There was a correlation between the activities of these enzymes and probing depth .Also there was a strong correlation between CK enzyme and relative attachment level.

Conclusion : based on these results, it can be assumed that the activity of these enzymes in saliva, as biochemical markers for periodontal tissue damage, may be useful in the diagnosis, prognosis and evaluation of periodontal therapy effects in periodontal disease.
