Background: Amelogenin (AM),a major enamel matrix protein(EMP),is a potent bone morphogenic protein which can enhance bone formation, and contains an active sub-protein(AAS).

Materials and methods: Twenty adult Syrian hamsters were grouped into 2, groups.

Two holes were induced in the mandible of each animal and 3 mgs of AM &AAS were applied in each whole of, group 1 and group 2 respectively.

Animal scarifying was done after 3, 7, 14, 21 and 28 postoperatively, serial sections were prepared and slides were examined by light microscope.

Results: Comparison of osteoinductive activity of whole AM protein (complex) with that of its intermediate molecular weight sub-protein (active sub-protein (AAS) revealed that the osteoinductive process was more accelerated after AM application than that after AAS application Conclusions: Other AM sub-proteins may act collectively with AAS to represent the excellent osteoinductive activity of AM protein.
