Chemical investigation of prunus mahaleb L. kernels

Abstract EN

Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the chemical constituents of Prunus mahaleb L.

kernels including coumarins and mucilage fractions.

Methods: Prunus mahaleb L.

kernels obtained from the local market in Cairo, Egypt were subjected to chemical investigations.

The isolated compounds were purified by different chromatographic techniques.

The isolated compounds were identified by UV, MS, 1H, 13C-NMR as well as acid hydrolysis.

Results: The coumarins fraction resulted in the isolation and identification of three compounds; one of them was totally novel.

The mucilage fraction yielded only one sugar which was identified as arabinose.

Conclusion: The new compound; 2- glucosyloxy-4-methoxy methyl trans cinnamate; was isolated in this work for the first time and identified using MS, 1H and 13C-NMR.

In addition, the two known compounds; coumarin and herniarin were also isolated.

From the mucilage fraction, only one sugar was isolated and identified as arabinose.
