Current trends in the management of sickle cell disease : review article

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is common in Sudan and in sub-Saharan Africa.

It is also prevalent in the Arabian Gulf countries and in India.

Despite the tremendous advances in diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, Children with sickle cell anemia continue to suffer from repetitive crisis and have frequent severe complications.

These morbid events as well as mortality can be greatly reduced by specialized medical care that focuses on prevention and active intervention.

This article reviews the most recent and evidence-based guidelines for preventive care and medical management of SCD and its most commonly encountered complications.
