English Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the fat-soluble vitamins A, D3 and E content in eight brands of infant formula, three brands of cereal food, three brands of full cream milk powder and ORDONVIT® chewable vitamins tablet that were purchased from the local market in 2003.
New method was developed and fully validated to analyze the samples based on saponification with aqueous KOH and extraction with n-hexane and then analysis by PDA-HPLC.
The method was validated in terms of accuracy, precision, stability, detection limits and recovery.
This method has the advantage of simultaneous determination of vitamin A, D3 and E in the same run at 280 nm.
Also, the run time is cut to 10 min. Based on our study, the content of vitamin A in 11 batches of 28 contains more than 300 percent of the labeling value, 10 batches of 28 contains from 60-200 percent of the label value, and 7 batches contain less than 60 percent.
For vitamin D3, 20 batches of 28 contains more than 300 percent of the label value, the other batches contains 70-260 percent of labeling value.
The content of vitamin D3 in ORDONVIT chewable vitamins tablet is in good agreement with the manufacture labeling value 90-165 percent.
For vitamin E, the content in all batches are well below the label value except the second batch of Sahha® Food which contains 93 percent of the labeling value. The results show that while most vitamins contents are not in good agreement with the label value, it is still beyond the toxic level. We predict that this method will find useful application in determination of fat-soluble vitamins in milk powder, cereal food and infant formula.
