Abstract AR
Abstract EN
A decentralized participatory cycle of selection of barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) was conducted in six locations in Jordan: Farmers' fields in five locations (Ghweir village, Mohai, Rabba, East Ramtha, and West Ramtha) in addition to the Agriculture Research Station at Ghweir.
A set of 181 barley genotypes was planted during the period of 19-26/11/2001.
These entries included fixed lines and segregating F3 populations, in addition to two checks (improved six-rowed released barley variety "Rum", and a local check).
In each location the plots were arranged in Incomplete Blooks.Design often plots each, and the layout was ten rows and twenty columns in each plot.
This allowed both an incomplete block design analysis as well as a bi-dimensional spatial analysis.
The following data were recorded: plant height, spike length, grain yield, total biomass, straw yield, harvest index and 1000 kernel weight.
In each location, six to eleven farmers in total (56) conducted the selection when the crop was close to full maturity, using a scoring method from zero (discarded) to 4 (the most desirable).
The local check out-yielded the improved variety Rum in 4 locations, but less in 2 locations.
In Ghweir there was no relation between the farmer's and the breeder's score to select plant height, while in Rabba the breeders selected tall plants while the farmers selected short plants.
During this first cycle of selection, farmers showed preference for two-rowed and white seeded varieties.
Combining the knowledge of farmers and the science of breeders in the selection of genotypes suitable for farmers own locations will be the first step towards the participatory plant breeding in Jordan .-Eventually, there is nothing to lose with the participation of farmers in selection practices, on the contrary, benefits will be high for both the farmers and breeders.
